Preparing for Breastfeeding
What can I do during pregnancy?
Breastfeeding preparation doesn't need to involve complicated routines or special products. The most important preparation you can do is to educate yourself on what to expect and understand how breastfeeding works.
One of the best ways to prepare is to learn about:
● How breastfeeding works
● Learn about how breast milk is produced.
● Early feeding cues.
● Learn about positioning and attachment.
● What to expect during the first few days
● Discuss your breastfeeding goals with your healthcare provider.
● Identify where you can access breastfeeding support after birth.
● Talk to your partner or support people about how they can support you.
A helpful reminder
You don't need to "prepare" your breasts for breastfeeding.
Your breasts are designed to breastfeed, and practices such as scrubbing or roughening the nipples are unnecessary and can cause discomfort or injury.
You don't need to wait until you have a breastfeeding problem before asking for help.
Antenatal breastfeeding education can help you feel prepared and confident before your baby arrives.
